The Underdog Shines - Trapped by societal rules, cultural norms, and homophobia, an underdog endures rejection, uncovering that the light within perceived weakness can become their greatest strength.
Crossing - Jordan has crossed the country to be with her estranged mother as she dies.Watching the live-
cam of moose migrating across a river in Sweden makes her reconsider her family’s own
migration across the Rio Grande. This one-act solo play breaks the fourth wall to invite the
audience into the childhood home where Jordan describes the moose swimming awkwardly
across a river. The moose remind her of her grandmother and the story of her river crossing that
Jordan never learned. She is an assimilated “English-only” American, while her grandmother,
having migrated as a young woman, never spoke English. Even so, Jordan felt closer to her
Mexican grandmother than to her first-generation American mother, and this tension informs her
narrative. Her geographical and emotional distance from her mother is a common American story
of cultural difference and audiences of all backgrounds can relate to Jordan’s dilemma. We learn
together that her mother’s impending death is less an ending than a beginning.
